What options should you consider on your next home for better efficiency?

With many products and systems designed for peak efficiency its hard to know which ones work and which ones are gimmicks. We personally believe in focusing on the mechanics of a home to increase efficiency. This in turn makes a home that is simple, hassle free and not dependent on chemicals. Here's a few things to consider…

  • Roof choice:

-Metal Roofing: Metal roofing in our opinion is the best option for efficiency and durability. There are three main kinds of metal roofing that we use. Corrugated, Standing Seam, and Tough Rib. Corrugated is our favorite because it is extremely durable and great for snow load. It is also the most efficient due to its wavy appearance that allows heat to disperse evenly through the panel.

-Cedar shakes: Cedar is a beautiful product and is also efficient. The main appeal of cedar is the appearance. But cedar has many draws backs that should be considered. Cedar is one of the most flammable roofing materials. If you live in a fire prone area it may be a good idea to use Metal roofing as and alternative. Cedar also requires routine maintenance like oiling.

-Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt can be efficient if installed correctly especially if you use a lighter color. Asphalt is cost effective and is great for roofs that have lots of pipes or skylights. Asphalt has greatly improved over the last 10 years, with some companies claiming wind ratings as high as 140mph.

Framing:

alternative framing is the number one way to reduce heat transfer into a building. Here are the two different styles that we use…

-Staggered wall framing: Staggered wall framing is basically making a thermal brake from the exterior walls to the interior walls of your home. Its allows for the same amount of insulation as a standard home, but drastically reduces thermal bridging. This makes your home very efficient and much more quiet than traditional framing. It is also cost effective.

-Double wall framing: Double wall framing is essentially building two walls with a space in-between to allow space for extra insulation. Double wall framing eliminates thermal bridging and is very similar to staggered wall framing, but it allows for R values as high as R-40 and above.

Traditional framing is also a great option for most applications. It's simple, cost effective, and with the right insulation can be efficient. Although not as efficient or quiet as the two stated above, it is tried and true.

Windows and doors

Options like multi-pane windows and doors are somewhat effective but we recommend prioritizing your windows to be south facing and limiting the amount of windows in a house. More importantly than the window is the blinds behind them. Blinds and coverings are the most effective way to increase efficiency in windows and doors.
